Mezo: Bitcoin-Powered EVM Chain Gas Fees

2026-07-21

Mezo is a Bitcoin-powered EVM-compatible blockchain. It provides a smart contract environment for DeFi applications that want Bitcoin as the native asset layer while maintaining EVM compatibility. The chain's gas token is BTC-backed, and it targets Bitcoin holders who want access to DeFi without bridging to an Ethereum L2.

Gas fees are the only revenue source for Mezo. Every transaction on the chain costs gas paid in the network's native token. Unlike most L2s that accumulate sequencer revenue in a treasury, Mezo's fee model is deflationary: gas fees are burned rather than collected by a sequencer or validator pool. This means fees and revenue are equal (every fee paid reduces supply), but the destination is the zero address rather than a treasury account.

The adapter queries the Mezo chain RPC for block data and computes total gas fees per block as gasUsed multiplied by effectiveGasPrice, summed across all transactions. The daily total is reported in USD using the BTC/USD price at the time of each block. The burn classification required care: the adapter correctly marks this as protocol revenue while the destination being the zero address (burn) is noted in the methodology. All-time fees stand at $57,800 with about $552 in the past seven days and $22 in the most recent day.
